Making Rare Diseases A Public Health Priority In All Member States

The Commission Communication and Council Recommendation on European Action in the Field of Rare Diseases have given momentum to the implementation of National Plans for Rare Diseases around Europe.

Currently France is the only country that has implemented a comprehensive plan. Netherlands has implemented a national strategy inclusive of all stakeholders and Italy has developed regional strategies. Bulgaria, Portugal and Spain, more recently, have adopted their own national plans. More are in the pipeline. Budget is a common issue to make the plan’s vision become reality.
