Rare Diseases International: Leaving No One Behind in Universal Health Coverage
This position paper, published by Rare Diseases International, advocates for the inclusion of rare diseases in the global framework of Universal Health Coverage (UHC). With over 300 million people affected by more than 6,000 rare diseases worldwide, this vulnerable population faces significant healthcare challenges, including delayed diagnosis, limited treatment options, and barriers to social and financial support.
The paper argues that true UHC cannot be achieved unless the needs of people with rare diseases are fully integrated into healthcare policies. It highlights the shared values of UHC and the rare diseases movement, such as equity, human rights, and social justice. The document calls for the global community to prioritise rare diseases in UHC planning and implementation, emphasising that this inclusion is not only feasible but essential for creating inclusive healthcare systems.
By addressing the health needs of those most vulnerable, this paper envisions a future where UHC ensures that no one, regardless of the rarity of their condition, is left behind.
